#89: 4 Ways to Help Your Kid Find Balance In Their Life!
There is nothing worse than feeling overwhelmed and off balance.
We feel the effects almost immediately when we work too hard or skew our schedule too much in one direction. We find it hard to think or even to know what to do next. Thankfully, as adults, we're generally pretty good at noticing when this is going on, so we can right ourselves fairly quickly.
Kids, though, lack these skills. When their lives are out of balance, they don't understand why things aren't working; they only know they're tired and stressed. This feeling of 'wrongness' leads to acting out, caving into emotions, or even shutting down.
How can we help our children to reorient themselves and get back on track? We start by giving them the skills they need to find balance all over again.
Limit Screens
Many children's problems are finding balance when it comes to screen time. Even when what they're doing online seems harmless enough, it can quickly become too much if they don't include exercise, family time, or even moments to be quiet in their day. Try scheduling an electronic free period during the day. This is an excellent opportunity to get the family outside or do something fun together.
Pick Fewer Activities
While it might seem incredible, your child is interested in art, athletics, and whatever else they're passionate about. The problem comes when they start getting so scheduled with lessons or outings that they no longer have time to finish homework or play. Help them find balance by showing them how to say 'no' sometimes, even to things they might like.
Make Health a Priority
One of the fastest ways we lose balance is to forget to give enough attention to our health. This includes exercise, a good diet, and restful sleep. It's essential to help them create good habits by ensuring health is always a priority so they have good habits as they grow.
Find Quality Time
It might seem like kids are always with their friends at school, but social interaction doesn't stop there. To balance properly, kids must spend time with the people they love. Family outings help you stay connected as a family. Time spent in church or youth teams fosters new relationships and strengthens bonds with peers. Calls with distant relatives and friends help them learn how to stay close to essential people even when they're far away.
Balance is all about teaching your child a life full of variety. It's also about learning when to step back and switch gears. Remember, the best teacher is you. Model the behavior you want your child to learn by keeping your own life in balance.
