#90: How Your Friends Can Help You Avoid Procrastinating!
How many great friends do you have?
Are you among those rare folks who count several as your best friends? Online sources (which may or may not know what they're talking about) generally state that most people have no more than two or three close friends. They have other friends and many acquaintances, but there are very few people you would count as your most valuable friends.
These are the individuals you care deeply for. When they have some success, it makes you feel like you succeeded as well. You have gone through life, sharing many ups and downs. You don't like to contemplate not having that person in your life.
What happens when you see a close friend messing up? They're doing something that you know will create an outcome that could be better. They've done it before, and here they are doing it again. It's as if they can't see what's happening as clearly as you can.
When this happens because your friend is procrastinating, don't judge. Give any help you can. Try to find a way to discuss what's going on without hurting their feelings. You can help them overcome a habit of procrastination that has caused them harm.
Whether or not you can help them, put yourself in their shoes after you try to improve their situation.
If We Know Just What Someone Else Should Do, Why Aren't We Doing It?
It's easy to give someone else advice. We are often very good at helping others because we look at their problems objectively. You care about your friends' welfare. But when you come down to it, you don't have the emotional investment present where your own welfare is concerned.
It might be easy to spot procrastinating patterns in your friends that they don't see. Why not put yourself in their shoes? Are there things you are doing that create problems on a predictable schedule that are linked to your habit of avoiding specific responsibilities or activities?
It's good to help your friends overcome bad habits that are causing problems. While you are assisting, look for procrastinating patterns of your own. Their practice of putting things off could help you spot opportunities to avoid the many problems procrastination can cause in your own life.
