#28: Your Life Experience Matters: Sharing Your Skills and Giving Back!

April 30, 20232 min read

Life brings experience. Over time, you’ve amassed a lot of skills and things you are very good at.

From career to personal interests, you know a lot of stuff. Your life experience matters and sharing your skills is a great way to give back.

There was a time when trades were handed down through generations. A family became known for a specific line of work and the older generation mentored the younger - sharing their knowledge and pouring it into the new generation. Nowadays, each generation explores interests regardless of their parents’ careers, and it isn’t as common to see family businesses handed down. Still, there is much to be learned from seasoned men and women who are experts in their craft.

Mentorships aren’t just about careers. Generally, any expertise can benefit someone else. The things you do with ease can be the very thing you can teach someone else and your knowledge helps keep important aspects of a trade or craft alive. Here are a few examples:

Mentoring trade secrets: Whether you are a business tycoon on Wall Street or a shoe cobbler, your skills have value. Sharing the trade secrets you have learned through blood, sweat, and tears can help someone become a master too. Teaching and mentoring someone saves them time and enhances their base skill sets.

Keeping traditions alive: Mentorship makes it possible to share traditions that might diminish otherwise. Mentorships can hand down timeless traditions and keep the stories and legends from the past alive for the new generation. Many of the traditions are packed with relevant information and techniques that matter just as much today as they ever have.

Energizing a community: There is a community attached to most careers or hobbies. Mentorship connects people with their community and helps bring people of like minds together. Mentorship plays a role in bridging gaps and making important introductions. This builds the community that surrounds your profession or hobbyist lifestyle.

Your combined life experience is a treasure chest for those eager to learn. Being open to sharing your experience, secrets, traditions, and community ensures new waves of people - of all ages - benefit from what you know. Being a mentor allows you to give back to the community that supported you and leave a legacy for generations to come. Don’t diminish or hoard your skills. Make them available to someone and help make an impact they won’t forget.
